In Case of an Emergency Dial 911
To provide fire protection, prevention, education and safety in the most cost effective manner to all residents, properties and businesses of Franklin Township Fire District #4
Historically, New Jersey fire companies were founded and operated by volunteers, relying solely on donations for funding.
As donation shortfalls became more prevalent in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, districts were established statewide to supplement these funds with tax revenue, ensuring fire companies could meet their growing needs. Our district, Franklin Township Fire District 4 (FTFD4), was formed in 1979: https://www.facebook.com/share/191xQJCeWU/?
Each district is governed by a Commission, designed to balance the fire company's needs with the taxpayer's interests. This system works effectively when the community is engaged and the commission maintains its integrity.
Since FTFD4 lacks a fire company within its boundaries, our primary goal has been to secure the best possible fire protection services for our taxpayers.
For over 45 years, FTFD4 contracted with South Brunswick Fire District 3 to provide services through the Kingston Volunteer Fire Company #1. This arrangement, governed by the state, required an equal revenue share to ensure fairness.
However, changes in priorities within District 3, coupled with a failure to maintain an equalized revenue share, resulted in Franklin Township residents paying nearly double the firematic taxes of their neighboring communities.
When voters rejected the proposed budget on February 15, 2025, the process moved to the township council. They then reset and appropriated a fair budget, as documented here: (starts @30:40) https://www.facebook.com/share/15ye59hirH/?mibextid=wwXIfr
After South Brunswick Fire District 3 voted 4-1 against further negotiations for a 1:1 equalized value, FTFD4 contracted with the Rocky Hill Fire Department on April 1, 2025. This agreement coordinates responses from three surrounding departments at a fair value equalized to where we should be.
